Thanks for your honesty.

Frédéric So personal and yet so universal. I have been deeply moved every time I have listened to this album over and over again the past few days because it's bursting with love and nostalgia but manages to be life-affirming too. Great work. Favorite track: I Went To Bed and I Loved You.

charliewarl This album was so important for me after my grandfather dies, and it remains one of the truest and most thoughtful explorations of grief I’ve encountered.

about

This is my new album ‘Denis Was a Bird’. Denis is my dad. He died in the spring of 2019, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and then dementia. I think it will always be one of the great privileges of my life that I was able to be present in the room, with him, when he died. I tried my best to take in every single second of it. To hold and keep the last moments of his living spirit.

Not long after my dad’s death, I realised something. That I wanted to crystallise everything I had learnt from his dying, and the capricious process of grief, into some form of meaningful art. And so here we are. An album of eleven songs. Eleven songs that I hope encapsulate the many varieties of emotions with death. Some of these emotions surprised me and they may surprise you also. Alongside the pain there are sparks of euphoria and hope that pop up from nowhere. There are odd comforts in unexpected moments, shards of light where darkness was anticipated, and epiphanies that will take you on journeys anew. Death is not a linear beast, it’s truly a mixed box of everything, and this album tries its best to reflect that.

I’ve tried my hardest to make this album as personal and honest as possible. During the writing process sometimes I had voices in my head saying “Tom, this is way too much info, they’re not going to want to listen to all this”. In the end, it felt crucial not to shy away from the realities, to keep reaching in the hope that an emotion, a phrase, a melody, resonates with you in some way.
